Caledonia Yawl

The Caledonia Yawl, designed by Iain Oughtred, is a large and versatile double-ended sailing boat with a striking sheer. Based on the inshore fishing boats of the Shetland Islands, the 19’9″ lapstrake hull combines traditional lines with modern epoxy-glued marine plywood construction.

On the water

The Caledonia Yawl is quick, manoeuvrable, easy to trailer and relatively low maintenance. Its traditional rig is simple to handle and the boat is easily sailed single-handed. It is well suited to day sailing and beach or camp cruising, with room for up to six adults.

Our custom trailer setup is designed to make launching and retrieving as straightforward as possible for a single person.

Auxiliary power

One of our Caledonia Yawls has used a 2 hp Honda four-stroke outboard. It is light, air cooled and has enough power to push the boat at a little over 5 knots in flat water at around two-thirds throttle.

Our builds

The boat shown on the original Denman Marine page was the seven-strake decked version of the Caledonia Yawl, with side bench lockers providing storage and additional buoyancy.

We have built a number of Caledonia Yawls in Tasmania and can build to suit the owner’s preferred interior and rig configuration.

Please note: the Caledonia Yawl is not available from Denman Marine in kit form.
