Denman Marine is Chesapeake Light Craft’s Australian and New Zealand dealer and local kit manufacturer, supplying CLC designs to builders throughout both countries.
Rather than importing complete CLC kits from the United States, Denman Marine manufactures the kits locally in Tasmania. Marine plywood components are CNC-cut in our workshop, solid timber is milled and prepared as required, and the timber, epoxy, fibreglass, fasteners and hardware components are assembled into kits ready for Australian and New Zealand builders.
Local manufacture also means Australian builders have access to technical support directly from our team of professional wooden boat builders. If you have a question during construction, you can speak to people who work with these materials and construction methods in our own workshop.

How Are Wooden Boat Kits Built?
Modern wooden boat kits are quite different from traditional boatbuilding where a hull might be constructed over a building mould from individually shaped planks. Many of the designs we supply use stitch-and-glue plywood and epoxy construction, allowing accurate, lightweight and strong wooden boats to be built without a large collection of specialised boatbuilding tools.
What Is Stitch-and-Glue Construction?
Stitch-and-glue construction starts with accurately shaped marine plywood panels. In one of our CNC-cut kits, the major plywood components have already been cut to their designed shape before they leave our workshop.
During construction, adjoining plywood panels are temporarily joined or “stitched” together, commonly using copper wire. The panels naturally take up the designed hull shape as they are assembled.
Once the hull has been correctly aligned, the joints are permanently bonded with epoxy. Epoxy fillets and fibreglass tape reinforce the seams, turning the separate plywood panels into a strong composite structure. Depending on the design, additional fibreglass cloth is then applied to selected areas or over the hull for additional strength and abrasion resistance.
The result is a lightweight wooden structure in which the plywood, epoxy and fibreglass work together. Once faired and finished with paint or varnish, the construction can produce a strong and durable boat without requiring the builder to shape every hull plank from raw timber.
CNC-Cut Parts
Marine plywood components are accurately cut to the shapes required by the design.
Stitch
The plywood panels are brought together and temporarily stitched into the shape of the hull.
Glue
Epoxy fillets and fibreglass tape permanently bond and reinforce the seams.
Fibreglass
Fibreglass cloth is applied where specified by the design to strengthen and protect the structure.
Finish
The boat is faired, sanded and protected with a suitable marine paint or varnish system.
Some designs use variations of this method. Chesapeake Light Craft’s LapStitch construction, for example, combines modern plywood-and-epoxy construction with overlapping planks that create the appearance of a traditional lapstrake or clinker-built boat.
Other designs may use strip-planked, hybrid or different construction methods, so always refer to the individual boat’s product information and build manual.
Why Build From a CNC-Cut Wooden Boat Kit?
Building from a kit removes much of the repetitive measuring, lofting and cutting involved in building directly from plans while leaving the actual boatbuilding in the hands of the builder.

A kit does not mean the boat simply clips together. Building a wooden boat remains a hands-on project involving assembly, epoxy work, sanding, fairing and finishing. The advantage is that much of the complex measuring and cutting has already been completed accurately before you begin.

What Is Included in a Denman Marine Boat Kit?
A typical base kit contains most of the major materials required to construct the basic version of the boat. Depending on the design, this may include:
- CNC-cut marine plywood components
- Solid timber components, prepared where applicable
- Copper stitching wire where required
- 316 stainless steel fasteners where specified
- West System epoxy resin, hardener and fillers
- Fibreglass cloth and tape
- Printed assembly manual

Kits generally do not include tools, paint or varnish, paddles, oars or workshop consumables such as sandpaper, gloves, brushes and rollers unless specifically stated otherwise.

Our wooden boat kits are manufactured at Denman Marine’s workshop in Kettering, Tasmania. We source materials and components from both Australian and international suppliers, depending on the requirements of each design and the availability of suitable marine-grade materials.
Plywood components are CNC-cut in-house and solid timber is milled and prepared in our workshop before the components are checked, packed and prepared for collection or freight.
This local manufacturing process is particularly important for Chesapeake Light Craft customers in Australia and New Zealand. Instead of receiving a complete kit manufactured in the United States, builders receive a CLC design manufactured locally by Denman Marine, with local support available throughout the build.
