Teal
Teal is a 1940s timber keelboat that came to Denman Marine for an extensive restoration. Built in Burnie, Tasmania, she is a King Billy pine carvel yacht and is believed to be the “Cappy” design by J. Julius Fanta.
The boat has a particularly attractive hull shape and was remembered as a strong performer. During the restoration, the son of one of her original owners also came forward and helped fill in more of the boat’s history.
Restoration work
- Returning the hull to its correct shape.
- Installing a new celery top pine stem, keelson and keel.
- Installing a new Huon pine transom.
- Extending the hull approximately 2 feet aft.
- Fairing the existing hull for a cold-moulded overlay.
- Cutting veneers for the cold-moulded work.
- Applying two diagonal veneer layers and one fore-and-aft layer.
- Sheathing the completed planking with double-bias fibreglass cloth.
- Fitting laminated frames and floors.
- Completing the deck framing.
- Laying teak decks over a marine plywood substrate.
Cold-moulded strengthening
The owner planned to sail Teal extensively after completion, including coastal racing. For this reason, the restoration included a King Billy pine cold-moulded overlay over the original carvel planking.
The new structure substantially reinforces the original hull while retaining the character and shape of the boat.
Tasmanian timber boat restoration
The project combined traditional Tasmanian boatbuilding timbers and an existing carvel hull with modern cold-moulding, fibreglass and epoxy techniques. It allowed an important older yacht to be returned to service while preparing her for demanding future use.
